An Empty Mind Need Not Be the Devil’s workshop
It is strange how we have been made to believe since growing years, fo an idle mind being the devil’s workshop. A unani scholar view is to the contrary.
Sit in a comfortable position as lotus or just cross legged in a quiet place, with the spine erect, hands folded across your lap, with the bottom of your right palm resting on the left palm and the two thumbs touching each other. Eyes angled at the slant of the nose, shoulders thrown back, chin slightly tucked in and the tongue tip touching the palate of the slightly open mouth the seven point vairacona posture.
Steady the mind with slow and regular breaths. Focus on the breath till you sense reasonable steadiness of mind. Observe the mind carefully. What is happening within it? Quite likely there will be thoughts because such is its nature. All forms, sounds, thoughts and perceptions there is nothing that does not arise in the mind. Now observe mindfully what is happening to these thoughts. Some come and go on their own; few others linger and retreat while yet others are persistent. This is a normal experience.
Here begins the interesting part. While in this state of observance, where you are aware of what is going on around you but not engaging in them on in any way, you will ‘see’ that unless there is an engagement of any arisen thought or feeling by the intervention of any one of the six senses, five sensory and the conceptualised mind, no response will be forthcoming in the form of body or speech actions. This means that only when we engage, consciously or subconsciously, with our arising thoughts and feelings, do they have the capacity to manifest further. It means, if we do not engage with arising thoughts or feelings, they will die or fade out on their own. This is the nature of our mind. Awareness, undivided from Emptiness. This is known as the view.
Slowly come out of this state and return to the ordinary state. As soon as an external negativestimulus of any kind is given to the mind, be it an angry word, an unpleasant smell, a loud sound, a painful feeling, a sorrowful sight, a negative thought with a capacity to bring suffering upon us or others, observe for a moment how this stimulus is being treated by the mind before reacting to it. If we can effiectively change this ‘immediately reactive’ treatment into a ‘delayed response’ kind of treatment from withiin the state of emptiness, the resultant offering will be pleasant and virtuous.
Train yourself in mindfulness. At all times be vigilant of the manner in which the mind is processing every external stimulus. To an ordinary mind, stimuli can be sensational, arousing, disturbing and seductive. The mind is gullible and thoughts can deceive easily. But if we are observant at every moment, we will be able to grasp the ‘slipping’ mind and instead respond from the view state of awareness emptiness.
This can be made a continuous living experience. And to relentlessly practise the accumulations of the view and meditation at all times, is our action.
Remember to humbly dedicate all pleasant sights for the liberation of the beings. Actions themselves have no capacity to bring benefit unless dedicated. Such dedication, detatched from pride, ambition and conceptualisation will bring us happiness through liberation from sufferance.
COVERSTORY
Unani system of Medicine
- The Rising sun
The Unani system of medicine owes, as its name suggests, its origin to Greece. It was the Greek philosopher-physician Hippocrates (460-377 BC) who freed Medicine from the realm of superstition and magic, and gave it the status of Science. The theoretical framework of Unani Medicine is based on the teachings of Hippocrates. After Hippocrates, a number of other Greek scholars enriched the system considerably. Of them Galen (131-210 AD) stands out as the one who stabilized its foundation, on which Arab physicians like Rhazes (850-925 AD) and Avicenna (980-1037 AD) constructed an imposing edifice.
Unani Medicine got enriched by imbibing what was best in the contemporary systems of traditional medicine in Egypt, Syria, Iraq,Persia, India, China and other Middle East and Far East countries. It also benefited from the native medical systems in vogue at the time in various parts of Central Asia. That is why this system is known, in different parts of the world, with different names such as Greco-Arab Medicine Ionian Medicine, Arab Medicine, Islamic Medicine Traditional Medicine, Oriental Medicine etc.
Unani system of medicine was introduced to India by the Arabs, and soon it took firm roots in the soil. The Delhi Sultans, the Khiljis, the Tughlaqs and the Mughal Emperors provided state patronage to the scholars and even enrolled some as
state employees and court physicians. The system found immediate favour with the masses and soon spread all over the country. During the 13th and 17th century Unani Medicine had its heyday in India. Among those who made valuable contributions to this system in the period were, to name only a few, Abu Baker bin Ali Usman Kashani, Sadruddin Damashqui, Bahwa bin Khwas Khan, Ali Geelani, Akbar Arzani and Mohammad Hashim Alvi Khan.
During the British rule, Unani Medicine suffered a setback and its development was hampered due to withdrawal of governmental patronage. But since the system enjoyed faith among the masses, it continued to be practised. It was mainly the Sharifi Family in Delhi, the Azizi family in Lucknow, Niamath family at Madras and the Nizam of Hyderabad due to whose efforts Unani Medicine survived in the British period. An outstanding physician and scholar of Unani Medicine, Hakim Ajmal Khan (1868 - 1927) championed the cause of the Unani system in India. The Hindustani Dawakhana and the Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College in Delhi Islamic Pharmacy in Chennai are the two living
examples of his immense contribution to the multipronged development of the two Indian systems of medicine - Unani Medicine and Ayurveda.
The Government of India established in 1969 a Central Council for Research in Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (CCRIMH) to develop scientific research in different branches of Indian systems of medicine - Unani Medicine, Ayurveda, Siddha, Yoga, Naturopathy and Homoeopathy. Research activities in these systems continued under the agies of the CCRIMH until 1978, when it was split into four separate research councils, one each for Unani Medicine, Ayurveda and Siddha, Yoga and Naturopathy and Homoeopathy, so as to further develop these systems in consonance with the basic philosophies of the respective systems. Also, with a view to streamlining education and regulating practice in Indian systems of medicine Ayurveda, Unani Medicine and Siddha, the Government of India set up by an Act of Parliament, Indian Medicine Central Council Act 1970, the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM).
In 1995, the Government also set up a full-fledged Department of Indian Systems of Medicine & Homoeopathy (ISM & H) in the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare to further boost the development of Unani Medicine and other Indian systems of medicine. The Department of ISM & H has recently been renamed as Department of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AUYSH). At present Unani system of medicine with its own recognized practitioners, hospitals and educational and research institutions, forms an integral part of the national health care delivery system. As far as Unani Medicine is concerned, today India is the world leader.
The inauguration of the Assembly-Secretariat complex on the Omandurar Government Estate in the heart of the State capital of Chennai marks another milestone in the history of the elected
legislature of Tamilnadu.
The first House of the Assembly was constituted in July 1937 after the general elections.
With a task-master in the form of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, and a team of officials headed by Chief Secretary K.S. Sripathi and Public Works Department Secretary S.Ramasundaram close to 5,000 persons worked on the project to complete a build up area of 87,058 square emtres in record time. Work commenced in November 2008. The remarkable speed with which 87,058 square metres of builtup area rising to seven floors is heading for completion is impressive. Adopting innovative technologies, careful project management, persistent reviews to sort out issues and the Chief Minister’s personal involvement has delivered the results.
On the occasion of the inauguration of Tamilnadu Assembly Complex we witness a galaxy of leaders from the capital to th eneighboring state Chief Ministers attending and prasing on Hon’ble Chief Minister.
The sun has risen on Unany System medicine with Govt. patronizing various schemes for the development of Unani system medicine and the sun shall not set till the Unani mission is completed such as.
1. Central Council of Indian Meidcine be bifuricated for the development of Unani education as par the research council.
2. An Unani University and All India Institute for Unani Medicine shall be establish.
3. All CGHS dispensary primary health centers and NRHM centers shall have a Unani Medical Officer.
4. All State Govt. shall create a post of Advisor (Unani) and in the Directorate, a Post of Joint Director (Unani) shall be a created and the Unani drug license Authority shall be a Unani Doctor.
5. Reviewing of Pre Tibb, Unani Pharmacist and Unani Paramedical courses in all the existing Unani Colleges.
Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine
The Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) - an autonomous organization of Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India has been busy developing independent scientific research into various fundamental and applied aspects of Unani Medicine since January 1979. During the 30 years of its functioning, the CCRUM has emerged into a leading institution of Unani medical research in the world. At present more than 25 centres are functioning under the Council in different parts of the country. And in the last few years some of these centers have earned worldwide fame for their leads in the fields of clinical research, drugn standardization, survey and cultivation of medicinal plants, and literary research.
Under its clinical research programmed, the Council has carried out both drug and disease based trials, and come out with safe and successful Unani treatment for some common and chronic diseases. These diseases include Bars (Vitiligo), Humma-e-ljamia (Malaria), Daul Feel (Filaria), Iltehad-e-Kabid (Infective Hepatitis), Wajaul Mafasil (Rheumatoid Arthritis), Zeequan Nafas (Bronchial Asthma), Ishal-e-Atfal (Infantile Diarrhoea), Sailanur Rahem (Leucorrhoea) and Kasrate-e-Shahmuddam (Hyperlipidemia). Having tested some 55 Unani drugs in 18 common disorders, the Council has published the results of morethan 15 studies. Recently, the Council has also applied for patents on seven Unani drugs it has developed, two of them being for Rheumatoid Arthritis, two for Bronchial Asthma, two for Hepatitis and one for Malaria. The Council is also attempting to scientifically establish the theory of humors and temperaments so fundamental to Unani Medicine, besides testing the usefulness of regimental therapies like Hajamat (Cupping). The Council has also developed a kit of more than 30 Unani medicines for common/seasonal ailments.
Quality control and standardization of both single and compound Unani drugs is one area in which the Council has done some quality work that is a new record in the 2500 year history of the system. So far, the Council has standardized more than 222 single and 385 compound drugs. Of these, standards for 122 single and 192 compound drugs have been approved by the Unani Pharamacopoeia Committee for inclusion in the official Unani Pharmacopoeia of India. The CCRUM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to collaborate through its various laboratories to develop viable bio-active molecules and to establish standardization procedures and improved processing and preserving techniques applicable to Unani Medicine industries for single and compound drugs for global competition. The Council has signed another MoU with National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), New Delhi for patenting and commercial exploitation of Unani drugs developed by the Council.
Another important area in which the Council has done some valuable work is the survey and cultivation of medicinal plants. Under this programme, the Council’s researchers have explored different forest zones in different States including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. During these surveys, morethan 54,000 plant specimens and 6,650 folk medicinal claims have been collected from tribal communities.
In the literary research programme, the Council has so far edited and translated from Araic and Persian classical of Unani Medicine into Urdu and published them. The Council has so far organized may National Seminars, Workshops and Internation Seminar on Unani Medicine. The Council’s researchers have produced more than 1500 research papers.
INTERACTIONS OF UNANI HERBAL DRUGS
WITH ALLOPATHIC MEDICINES
INTRODUCTION
Unani drugs are safe without any side effects. People do take herbal drugs with other Allopathic drugs. But unknowingly they will not get expected results because of negative interactions of Allopathic drugs with herbal one. Everything you put in your mouth has the potential to interact with something else. The medication that is taken by mouth travels through the digestive system in much the same way as food and herbs taken orally do. So, when a drug is mixed with food or another herb, each can alter the way the body metabolizes the other. Some drugs interfere with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients. Similarly, some herbs and foods can lessen or increase the impact of a drug. Here is the list of herbs which are taken with commonly used Allopathic drugs.
INTERACTION BETWEEN POPULAR HERBS AND DRUGS
j HAWTHORN (Rhaphiolepis indica)
It is effective in reducing angina attacks by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, should never be taken with Digoxin, the medication prescribed for most heart ailments. The mix can lower your heart rate too much, causing blood to pool, bringing on possible heart failure.
j GINSENG (Panax ginseng)
This can increase blood pressure, making it dangerous for those trying to keep their blood pressure under control. Ginseng, garlic or supplements containing ginger, when taken with the blood-thinning drug, Coumadin, can cause bleeding episodes.
Coumadin is a very powerful drug that leaves little room for error, and patients taking it should never take any medication or otherwise before consulting a qualified health professional. In rare cases, ginseng may over stimulate resulting in insomnia. Consuming caffeine with ginseng increases the risk of overstimulation and gastrointestinal upset.
j GARLIC (Allium sativum)
Garlic capsules combined with diabetes medication can cause a dangerous decrease in blood sugars. Some people who are sensitive to garlic may experience heartburn and flatulence.
Garlic has anti-clotting properties. You should check with your doctor if you are taking anticoagulant drugs.
j GOLDENSEAL (Hydrastis canadensis)
It is used for cough, stomach upset, menstrual problems and even arthritis. However, the plant’s active ingredient will raise blood pressure, complicating treatment for those taking antihypertensive medications, especially beta-blockers.
For patients taking medication to control diabetes or kidney disease, this herb can cause dangerous electrolyte imbalance.
High amount of consumption can lead to gastrointestinal distress and possible nervous system effects.
j FEVERFEW (Tanacetum parthenium)
This is believed to be the natural remedy for migraine headaches, should never be taken with Imitrex or other migraine medications. It can result in the patient’s heart rate and blood pressure to raise dangerous levels.
j GUARANA (Paulinia cupana)
Guarana, an alternative remedy being used as a stimulant and diet aid, contains 3-5 % more caffeine than a cup of coffee. So, if you are taking any medication that advises you against taking any drink with caffeine, you should avoid taking this stimulant.
j KAVA (Piper methysticum)
Kava herb that has anti-anxiety, pain relieving, muscle relaxing and anticonvulsant effects should not be taken together with substances that also act on the central nervous system, such as alcohol, barbiturates, anti depressants, and antipsychotic drugs.
j ST. JOHN’S WORT (Hypericum perforatum)
It is a popular herb used for the treatment of mild depression. The active ingredient of St. John’s Wort is hypericin. Hypericin is believed to exert a similar influence on the brain as the monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors such as the one in major antidepressants.
Mixing MAO inhibitors with foods high in tyramine, an amino acid, produces one of the most dramatic and dangerous food-drug interactions. Symptoms, which can occur within minutes of ingesting such foods while taking an MAO inhibitor, include (Rapid rise in blood pressure, severe headache, Collapse and even death).
Some patients report that Saint John’s Wort caused excessive stimulation and sometimes dizziness, agitation and confusion when taken with other antidepressants or over-the-counter medications like Maximum Strength Dextrin and Acutrim. It also caused their blood pressure to shoot up.
j WHITE WILLOW (Salix alba)
It is a traditionally used herb for fever, headache, pain, and rheumatic complaints may lead to gastrointestinal irritation, if used for a long time. It exhibits similar reactions as aspirin (Aspirin is derived from white willow). Long term use may lead to stomach ulcer.
CONCLUSION
Unani Herbal and Allopathic drugs should not be consumed without any supervision of health professional.

couples arguments
Couples who argue a lot spend 10 days a year not talking to each other You’ve heard the saying that small arguments between couples are healthy as they help strengthen the bonds of love. But what about the after effects of these arguments.
According to a survey, an average married couple has two arguments a week, each of which results in the ‘silent treatment’ for an average of two hours and 12 minutes. Add it up and the result couples spend almost 10 days in a year not talking to each other. So, why is it that couples argue? The reasons are plenty and diverse, but two of the most common reasons, as per the findings of the study; are that either one of the partner has said the wrong thing and the feeling is that the partner is taking him/her for granted.
We are living in a jet-paced world. Counsellors are quick to point out that this fast-paced modern life means that couples are also more prone to rows. Add to this the ever increasing pressures of successfully managing both, the home and work. Counsellors claim that they are not at all surprised at the amount of time couples spend not speaking to each other.
One counsellor was quoted by a newspaper as saying, “It’s very easy to snap at one another when you are stressed, especially if the couple live in a big city where there is always a crunch of time.” She goes on to add that the only way to work around this problem is for the couple to be disciplined about spending quality time together. Couples should not become overwhelmed by work. The key to doing it right is communication.
Besides the reasons mentioned above, there are also some other fundamental issues that made it to the list including disagreements over child-rearing, being shunned in the bedroom, jealousy over friendships and never going out together as a couple.
Sometimes, silence can be best for both parties. It’s better to give each other the silent treatment than have a raging row as it gives you a chance to calm down and think about things.
HEALTH BENEFICIAL ROYAL JELLY
INTRODUCTION
Royal jelly is a “thick milky” substance that worker bees produce to feed the larva of worker bees for the first 3 days. Worker bees are fed with a mixture of pollen and honey after the 3 days of Royal Jelly. However, the larva which the workers have selected to develop into Queens are continued to be fed with Royal Jelly for 10 days and the abundance of Royal Jelly makes the larva become a Queen. Queen bees are made from the same kind of egg that makes a worker bee. Queen Bee is about 45% longer and 60% heavier than the normal worker bee. They can lay up to 2000 egg’s a day in the peak of the season which all together weighs approximately 2 ½ times of its body weight. Only the Queen leaves her hive to mate in the air or to live with a swarm. The Queen can live up to 6 years but in most cases, she becomes non-productive by the 4th year and the workers then replace her by producing a new queen. Most bee keepers, however, replace the queen by the 3rd year or sooner to keep the hive strong.
CULTIVATION
q Royal jelly is produced by stimulating colonies with movable frame hives to produce queen bees.
q Royal jelly is collected from each individual queen cell (honey comb) when the queen larvae are about four days old.
q It is collected from queen cells because these are the only cells in which large amounts are deposited & when royal jelly is fed to worker larvae, it is fed directly to them and they consume it as it is produced, while the cells of queen larvae are “stocked” with royal jelly much faster than the larvae can consume it. Therefore, only in queen cells is the harvest of royal jelly practical.
q A well-managed hive during a season of 5–6 months can produce approximately 500 g of royal jelly.
q Since the product is perishable, producers must have immediate access to proper cold storage (e.g., a household refrigerator or freezer) in which the royal jelly is stored until it is sold or conveyed to a collection centre. Occasionally honey or beeswax is added to the royal jelly for storage.
COMPOSITION
Royal jelly is collected and sold as a dietary supplement, claiming various health benefits with the presence of components like B-complex vitamins such as pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). The overall composition of royal jelly is 67% water, 12.5% crude protein (including small amounts of many different amino acids), and 11% simple sugars (monosaccharide’s), also including a relatively high amount (5%) of fatty acids. It also contains many trace minerals, some enzymes, antibacterial and antibiotic components, and trace amounts of vitamin C. The fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K, are completely absent from royal jelly.

Three generations of a business family speak on how Budget touches their lives
I can’t forget the Union Budget of 1989 that laid the foundation of privatisation of healthcare in the country.
This time too, as an individual, I feel the FM has done a great job this time by pulling the country out of the global crisis and readjusting the economy on the growth part.
The wealth of a nation is a dependant on the health of its citizens. No nations can afford to have sick people. India needs one lakh more hospital beds in the next decade. The government should create an enabling environment that ensures more investment in this sector.
The government should also focus on skill development of doctors, nurses and paramedics. The requirement of the healthcare industry is 2.5 crore people including doctors, nurses and paramedics. This means we should have double the number of doctors that we have, triple the number of nurses and quadruple number of paramedics. I also feel that there should be greater focus on health insurance. There should be greater awareness, detection and health protection in the form of insurance.

MAKE A LASTING IMPRESSIONS
A first impression, if made perfectly, can work wonders. here are the biggest first date turn-offs for men and women. Just make sure that you don’t make these mistakes.
Men detest women who talk too much about former relationships or spend too much time on the mobile phone. Over 21 percent of single guys named phone calls and texting as their pet hate. This is the surest way to put off a man, because he cannot stand the thought that he may be facing competition. Just as bad is a third degree style questioning about his job, salary, friends etc. Yes, do ask, but a little diplomacy versus interrogation, will take you places.
An internet survey has revealed that men shouldn’t talk about physical intimacy on the first date. That’s been listed as one of the biggest turn-offs for many. Cracking silly jokes, behaving rudely with waiters and other service staff and non-chivalrous behaviour not holding the door open for her, not offering to pay the bill, not enquiring about whether she’s reached home sefely, passing lewd comments about other women, are just as bad.
One point of consensus for both men and women is about personal hygiene. Bothe parties agree that if the person of the opposite sex is not particular about how he or she looks when they turn up to meet you, it could indeed be an instant turn-off. Hygiene includes ensuring against bad breath, body odour, dirty feet, crumpled clothes, unkempt beard, uncombed and unwashed hair.
